How To Teach Online: 3 of the Most Common Fears Busted
Tim Cooper
May 12 2015
In this episode I talk about three common problems that hold people back from creating their online course.
The first obstacle is the belief that you don't know enough the about the topic, that you're not an expert.
As I explain in this episode, as long as you can explain the topic clearly and know more than the next person then there will be people out there willing and happy to learn from you.
The second barrier to getting started with your course is choosing how the material will be presented.
What is the best media for your audience? This is a big and important topic that I plan to cover in more detail in its own Podcast.
Here I touch on the demographic of your intended audience and the type of material you are presenting. If you need to demonstrate how to use a piece of software than screen casting is the obvious choice. But audio and text can be used very effectively as well.
When in doubt ask your audience. If you already have a following ask them what they prefer and cater to your audience. You will usually find that a combination of video, audio and text works well for most people.
The third and probably most common hurdle I come across when researching and talking to people is equipment.
“What microphone do I need?”, “What software should I use?”, “Can I use my iPhone to shoot video for my course?”. This list questions relating to equipment is seemingly endless. But, there is no need to get yourself all hung up and stressed about equipment.
Seriously, you can start creating courses with the equipment you already have, and if you need to get a microphone or piece of software there are options for everyone's budget. (You can check out my Course Creation Resource here)
The best way to overcome these barriers is to simply get started.
Make some sort of start. Start outlining your course structure, bullet pointing your lesson topics, shooting a video on your smartphone or talking through some notes as you record your screen. Just get started.
